WANdisco (LSE: WAND), a leading provider of continuous-availability software for global enterprises to meet the challenges of Big Data, announced yesterday that after an extensive evaluation, British Gas, the UK’s largest utility and home services provider, has significantly scaled up its Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks (NASDAQ: HDP) deployment for live customer-facing operations. The resulting new three-year subscription is WANdisco’s largest Big Data deal to date, with a value of $750,000.

Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks is an integrated, continuous availability Big Data solution built on HDP (Hortonworks Data Platform). Together, WANdisco and Hortonworks partner to deliver 100% uptime with performance and scalability for global enterprises using HDP across multiple data centers.

An initial pilot of WANdisco’s Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks (announced on March 20, 2014) enabled British Gas to capture real-time data from over a million household Smart Meters. The pilot demonstrated that British Gas could achieve significant cost savings in data storage and processing, without data loss or downtime. WANdisco was able to demonstrate continuous availability, as well as performance and scalability that otherwise could not have been achieved.

Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks will now move into live production, with the amount of data under management scaled up to more than twice its original level. Real-time analytics from the ‘Connected Homes’ program will enable British Gas to dynamically match energy supply with demand on a 24-by-7 basis and make it possible for business and residential customers to take greater control of their energy use.

Customers see our Hadoop technology as critical for enterprise Big Data deployments,” said David Richards, CEO and Co-Founder of WANdisco. “Enlarging our footprint with existing customers like British Gas, in addition to gathering new customers, is a very important part of our strategy. This deal clearly demonstrates our ability to expand a small initial Big Data deployment into a much larger deal.”
