Data Systems Strategies for Today’s Challenges

To address today’s challenges and come up with viable data systems strategies, pharmaceutical companies are looking outside the industry to leverage scientific and technical innovation in other markets.

In the current environment, with data growing at a rapid pace, technology – especially informatics systems – is trying to keep up with increasing business needs. For example, translational efforts are pushing the need to integrate clinical development and research data. And with the arrival of large molecule drugs onto the market, comes the need for new informatics systems assays and workflows.

Technology, or course, is improving and growing in capability to address these needs and more.  Innovative database architectures, including columnar and NoSQL, offer a lot more than traditional relational database management systems. On top of technology like this, cloud technology and SaaS solutions have been improving dramatically as interest in the cloud continues to grow. But with all of these capabilities comes more complexity that takes deep exploration to truly understand and utilize.

In a recent white paper, PerkinElmer discusses how to address this complexity and take advantage of data systems’ growing features and capabilities. For pharmaceutical companies, in particular, the white paper “Big Data and Science Strategy” asserts that instead of only growing out end-market applications, the industry needs to utilize and adopt systems and solutions that have been successfully developed and deployed in other vertical markets.

Further, no one solution provider can support all types of workflows; hence the need for open platforms and standards to craft data systems strategies and platforms. PerkinElmer calls this the Big Data platform, which is based on “perception, agility, and flexibility.”

Building out a Big Data platform requires valuable partnerships with technology providers, who may have created products originally for non-pharmaceutical vertical markets. PerkinElmer gives the example of its current partnership and collaboration efforts with technology partner TIBCO Spotfire.

In the complete white paper, PerkinElmer explores the following:

  • Today’s informatics challenges
  • Complexity of technology landscape
  • Different approaches and data systems strategies

The company also offers a summary of its current applications and platform components of its own cloud-based systems.
