Aerospike NoSQL Database Selected by KAYAK

aerospike_logo Aerospike Inc., a flash-optimized NoSQL database with speed and reliability, has announced that KAYAK, the travel search engine, selected Aerospike’s database technology to power personalized advertisements and special offers across its entire network and scale to meet rapid international growth.

Aerospike filled a gap for KAYAK that other caching and database technologies couldn’t deliver on,” said Ko Baryiames, SVP Technology, KAYAK. “As we continue to rapidly expand into international markets, we needed a solution that was reliable and could scale to serve offers across our network. Aerospike enabled us to achieve multi-key gets in less than 3 milliseconds, deploy with ease and scale with very low jitter.”

Operating in 34 countries and 18 languages, KAYAK enables travelers to easily compare hundreds of travel sites with one search and processes over one billion queries a year. To support its continued global growth and ensure predictable high performance, KAYAK replaced ehcache and memcache with Aerospike’s in-memory database and NoSQL Key Value Store. Aerospike’s hybrid approach to storage combines RAM and flash memory, enabling KAYAK to meet both it’s high performance requirements and scale requirements, while using fewer servers.

Currently, KAYAK runs Aerospike on bare metal servers with Intel Solid State Drives (SSDs), and has Aerospike clusters located in two data centers in the U.S. and Europe that are synchronized using Aerospike Cross Data Center Replication (XDR). Since replacing its caching tiers with the Aerospike Key Value Store, KAYAK has experienced reliable performance with zero downtime.

KAYAK pioneered direct booking on metasearch and transformed online travel booking,” said Aerospike co-Founder and VP Engineering & Operations Srini V. Srinivasan. “We are thrilled that Aerospike is fueling innovation at KAYAK and that our unmatched price/performance is helping KAYAK scale its international growth and success.”
